A Decade of Photography

This decade will be one that I will never forget when it comes to my photography journey.

2011

I took my dad's old point and shoot camera to a family trip to Niagara Falls and took my very first photos of nature. I fell in love with it!

2012

I got my first DSLR (one of the early Canon Rebels) and began photographing what I loved most - nature and wildlife.

2013

I decided to change my path from environmental sciences to environmental communications. I applied and got accepted into the Environmental Visual Communications (EVC) program. My hope was to merge my environmental science background with photography to help share the environmental story, inspiring positive action. At that time I had no idea what the future held for this career path, but it felt right. I'm grateful that I made this choice because it led to some incredible opportunities.

2014-2016

I graduated from University of Guelph with a BSc in Environmental Biology, started and completed my post-graduate degree in Environmental Visual Communications, and started volunteering with Photographers Without Borders. I also worked on some exciting projects for the Royal Ontario Museum, including documenting parts of their blue whale project. I experimented with photographing just about everything, from portraits and events, to street and landscapes. I even photographed a wedding!

2017

Lots of soul-searching occurred during this time. I felt unsatisfied with the direction my photography career was going. I was focusing so heavily on portraits and events, because it was bringing in money. But it wasn't what I wanted to be photographing. During this time, I also took a trip to Nicaragua with Photographers Without Borders which reminded me of why I fell in love with photography in the first place and what my goals were when I first started. It was the inspiration I needed to start getting back on track.

2018

More soul-searching — what type of photographer did I want to be? I dabbled in ethical fashion photography for a while and met some incredible people.

2019

I made the decision to return to what I love most — nature and wildlife. I took down all my portrait work and started the process of creating new goals that align with my soul’s desires.

Lots of ups and downs, trial and error, experimenting and learning happened during these years. But it was all worth it, because I’m entering this new decade with lots of lessons and the intention of only doing what feels right and brings me joy. Excited to see what the future holds.

Thank you to each and every one of you for all the support over the years!

Here’s to a new decade with progress, peace and joy. ✨ Happy 2020!
